IMSA to replace CTMP Mobil 1 Grand Prix weekend in July with a second race at the Glen
FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR THIS MAJOR MOTORSPORT EVENT IS NOT TO TAKE PLACE AT CTMP DUE TO THE QUARANTINE PERIOD REQUIRED IN CANADA
Originally slated to take place right after the 6 Hours at the Glen on July 1-4, IMSA announced today they are to compete a second weekend at the Glen with the WeatherTech 240 to take place on July 1-2.
The two Hours and 40 minutes race will see the DPi, LMP3, LMP2, GTLM and GTD compete for the win. Being held over a two day schedule, the race is to take place Friday July 2nd at 6pm. Also on the same day, the Michelin Pilot Challenge will have their two hour race with a green flag set for 2:35pm. Also on the schedule is the one-hour 45 minutes IMSA Prototype Challenge race.
This event was even doubtful since the start of the year with the continuing restrictions issued by the Canadian Government regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. With the matter becoming more critical lately, it is no surprise IMSA made this decision.
IMSA released the news on their website stating: “The events replace previously scheduled events for that weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, which have again been canceled for 2021 due to quarantine requirements for travelers into Canada. IMSA looks forward to returning to the historic Canadian circuit in 2022.”
“We are grateful to Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup and his team for helping us arrive at a solution when it became apparent that we would be unable to make our planned trip to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park this year,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “Likewise, we are thankful that our partners at the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)’s Glen Region are willing to share their previously scheduled event weekend at The Glen with us as well. We sorely missed the opportunity to race at Watkins Glen last year, but we’re delighted to bring those loyal fans two IMSA event schedules in little more than a week in 2021.”
We await to hear form CTMP as to what is to become of the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix weekend.
