Latifi places 6th in Barcelona Race 2
TOP 8 REVERSE GRID FROM YESTERDAY’S RESULT HAD LATIFI START IN 8TH PLACE
After a great race yesterday where Nicolas Latifi patiently waited for the right moment to pounce ahead of UNI-Virtuosi Racing driver Guanyu Zhou for what was third place at that moment and eventually turned in to first place after the pit stop of the two drivers ahead of him, today’s race had a different scenario.
At the start of the 26 laps race, Latifi, sitting in eight place, had quite a bit of wheelspin and that was enough to loose a couple of spots by turn one. Charouz Racing System driver Callum Ilott on pole and MP Motorsport Jordan King occupying the front row also had a poor start which gave a chance to Antoine Hubert(Arden International) to leap ahead of the duo form third place to take the lead at corner one. He was followed by Nyck de Vries(ART Grand Prix) who started in fourth.
Before the end of lap 1, Carlin driver Nobuharu Matsushita’s car caught fire while at speed this bringing out the full course yellow. He got out safely but it was enormous fire. The marshalls eventually putting out the fire. After all the clean up the race resumed and Latifi was occupying ninth place. By the eight lap, DeVries passed Hubert at the end of the long front straight.
On lap 16, Latifi was shown in sixth place. Meanwhile, Championship contender Luca Ghiotto was having a much better race and was running in third.
Not much else happened until the checkered flag when Nick DeVries crossed the line first ahead of Ghiotto by three seconds. Ilott finished third and Nicolas Latifi sixth but with the fastest lap of the race.
Latifi remains on top of the Driver’s Championship on 93 points, with Ghiotto at 67. Followed by De Vries in third on 63 points, Aitken with 62 and Guanyu Zhou at 34 points.
Next race is Monaco on May 23-25.
